The current vintage of Chateau Arnauld is on sale for up to €58, but we are offering a 4-Pack, two of each of the 1997 & 1998 for €100! We have gotten a great deal and as always we are passing the saving on to STSWiners!
Chateau Arnauld is a Cru Bourgeois from Bordeaux, enviably positioned in the centre of a triangle of famous appellations including Margaux and St. Julien. They were designated Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel last year and they are a terrific under the radar producer.
The pack offers a fascinating tale of two vintages. 1998 is a classic Bordeaux vintage and is Classic Claret. There is still plenty of black fruits and spicy complexity, with a backbone of acidity keeping the freshness. We poured straight from bottle between 6 and it did not last long at all.
1997 is a more enigmatic wine erring on the red fruit spectrum displaying layers and layers of leather and tobacco. We decanted this to see if it would show a little more and it started to unfurl like a peacock, unfortunately it lasted as long as the 1998, it was becoming very interesting on the nose.
Old wine is fun and interesting. This is best enjoyed with a few people. Old wine can fall apart if decanted, but this seemed robust enough. If you decant, constantly monitor it. The only way to know if you're getting the best from it is to swirl, sniff and sip....and repeat!
