Red Wine /// Merlot, Franc, Cabernet // Bordeaux / Ireland
This is a modern venture: the wine making team is made up of one of the France’s best winemakers and one of France’s best sommeliers. French wine maker’s dogmatic loyalty to terroir and terroir only has led to a lack of pragmatism towards the brand positioning and product viability, an approach that is yielding great success elsewhere. 70% Merlot, 20% Franc and 10% Cabernet, it is a true representation of the Right Bank and is all Grand Cru fruit plucked from vineyards adjacent to some of St Emillion’s most famous producers; Fleur Cardinal, Peby Faugere and Pressac. Winemaker Franck Jugelman is one of the Right Bank’s most sought-after consultant oenologists. He is the former winemaker at the most famous First Growth house: Chateau Haut Brion. There is no lack of prestige here.

But the wine! It is a revelation. It is reminiscent at first of serial hundred pointer Chateau Pavie: rich with a similarly dense colour and layered nose. On entry it is a powerfully rich and brooding style. Quickly you realise though that this is a very different beast. Firstly, they do not believe in lowering the yields to hysterical levels to achieve maximum concentration, they let the fruit and the site speak for itself. Secondly, there is a lovely backbone of acidity that keeps the palate nimble and fresh. This is all underpinned by the traditional smorgasbord of St Emillion characteristics: black and blue fruits, spice, violets, black forest cake, coffee and chocolate. The result is a pitch perfect but approachable St Emillion Grand Cru that will also take cellaring time for at least 7 years. It is only a matter of time before this gem is unearthed. STSWine
