Alvaro Palacios is Spain's most celebrated wine maker. Born in the family winery in Rioja, he spread his wings as a wine maker at Petrus & Stag's Leap before coming back and establishing, not just his own label, but entire regions in Priorat and Bierzo in the 1990's. (Before this time these regions were but a footnote in wine encyclopedias).

Ville de Corullon is the wine that kickstarted the Bierzo region and the near extinct variety of Mencia. Corullon is a village wine that utilises schist grown Mencia of the steep mountain slopes around Corullon, as well as from his 3 Grand cru sites, Moncerbal, Las Lamas & La Faraona. Franch oak and lots of stem and whole bunch, it is made like a serious Burgundy, but in Spanish fashion has some whites varieties. Fresh, acidic, moreish and impossibly complex, this is an incredible wine and pound for pound regularly cited as one of the best value wines on the planet. The first commercial vintage was 1999, so these 6 vintages represent a significant portion of the wine and this region's history and DNA. STSWine
