Marco Ricasoli’s 2013 San Marcellino is gorgeous, weaving together flavors of juicy black cherry, Tuscan herbs and subtle spice in a supple frame with racy acidity. Notes of crushed graphite and menthol emerge with exposure to air, building on the complexity and structure. The wine combines finesse and excitement in a compelling expression of Sangiovese. 96 POINTS, WINE AND SPIRITS
Named after a nearby 11th century church, the 7ha San Marcellino vineyard boasts 50-year-old vines. The wine is rounded out with Pugnitello, a recently revived Tuscan grape that lends colour and fleshy fruit. Aged in small French barrels, of which 20% are new, it's a deft demonstration of finesse and power. Dark cherry, liquorice, leather and an underlying minerality are fully complemented by well-integrated oak. 93 POINTS, DECANTER
