We are constantly shouting about new-wave Rioja, cool wine makers like the Rioja n Roll cllective that are making uber clean and high toned Tempranillo, so we thought we'd give props to the old hands of Rioja. The producers that are still crafting that most epic of old school wine styles; slightly oxidative, rustic, full bodied, warm and oaky blends using Garnacha, Graciano, Tempranillo and Viura...in no particular order. Akutain are situated in Rioja Alta, and they are a grower producer, in that (unusually for Rioja) the wines are made with all estate grown fruit. 
Cosecha 2021 is 100% Tempranillo, fermented in fiberglass vats with native yeasts and raised in American oak with an extra year in barrel before release. Crianza 2018 is comprised of mostly Tempranillo with Garnacha, raised for 1 year and 9 months in used American oak barrels, with an additional year in the bottle before release - far exceeding the Rioja D.O.’s aging requirements for Crianza wines. The Akutain Reserva 2017 is comprised of mostly Tempranillo with Garnacha. It was fermented with native yeasts in fiberglass vats, and raised in older American oak for 2 years and 10 months, with additional year in the bottle before release. A throwback to Rioja's past.
