Wow. Just wow. I admit that I hadn't had any Hungarian wine since WSET nearly 15 years ago. At that point there was only the amazing and famous Tokaji Aszu sweet wine made from Furmint, but also neutral (at best) Furmint and the stalwart but pretty horrific Bulls Blood of Eger. This new line of modern Hungarian beauties blew me away. They are imported by Balázs Rakamazi, a Dublin based chef who is an absolute pleasure and is just brimming with enthusiasm and energy to try and share these fantastic wines from his homeland. We loved all of them.
Böjt Egri Csillag (meaning the star of Egri) is terrific blend of Welshriesling, Leanyka, Sauv. Blanc and Muscadet. Organic, good depth and texture, there is a beautiful saltiness to this dry white. Steigler Furmint shows the potential of Furmint, another very dry white, it comes of schist soil, giving it minerality, with a lick of oak - serious depth. Heimann & Flai Szekszárd made from the red grape Kékfrankos is a haunting ine, with that core of savoury fruit and beautiful perfume and acidity. Vida Peter Petit Bonsai is made from the red variety Kadarka, and is similar in it's elegance and perfume - stunningly beautiful. Heimann SXRD is a blend of Hungarian and European varieties (unusually including Sagrantino from Italy) which adds a little more weight and concentration, while the last wine in the 6-Pack Gai Tibor Egri Bikavér Superior adds a little more power, matching fruit and a stylish rusticity.
