Rioja is changing. Geographical Indicators will accompany the old crianza etc ageing model. We have 6 Rioja Reds that show the new versatility of the region - 3 trad. and 3 new wave.
We start with a salt of the earth, old school Rioja from one of the regions most famous producers: Lopez Heredia Vina Cubillo 2011. Aradon Tinto is a good old fashiones Joven style Tempranillo. Vina Ijalba Solferino is an organic 100% Tempranillo from one of Rioja's oldest producer.
The Rioja n' Roll collective are a group of Rioja wine makers that support the philosophy of fruit and terroir rather than oak and ageing. Laventura La Nave shows bright lifted intensity and prickly acidity, and Alegre Valganon 2019 shows a little more meat on the bone, both are similar blends. Finishing with El Mozo Herrigoia - a field blend made from several microplots, multiple varieties (even some white grapes!) made in concrete via carbonic maceration. This is how Rioja was made before Rioja was a thing - old school new wave!!
