3 of each: Laski Riesling & Blaufrankisch

This is cool. Liam and Sinead Cabot have been making wine in Slovenia for 6 years while also running a successful distribution business out of the West of Ireland. They are made in tiny quantities, each bottle is numbered by hand on the back label. The wines have really started to gain some traction now with one Jancis Robinson particularly losing her shit:

ROKA KOG LASKI: Ripe and spicy, if the Furmint is all about light and sky, Laski is earth and fire. It has roundness and physicality and weight, rooted in the spices of the ground - fresh ginger, fresh tumeric - and the sweet bite, warmth, energy of pepper, cumin, cardamom, mace, saffron. The sweetness of ripe pear and tangerine curves through the palate, feather-brushed with bitter orange oil, grilled pomelo peel. The acidity is so ripe it bends round the sphere of the wine and into an insistent, spiralling finish. A hole hearted wine, a wine with its heart on a plate, handing itself over in total surrender to the drinker. 17/20 JANCIS ROBINSON

ROKA KOG BLAUFRANKISCH: Smells like apples and blackcurrents. Pencil lead and peonies on a warm night. Intense fruit and flavour, piercing elegance and pin-point refinement. It curves a long, lean arc in the mouth. The tannins have the supple, brushed-velvet softness - but presence - of a kid glove. It's embryonic, folded origami tight; you can almost feel the umbilical cord still there, attached to the vines it came from. And yet it's already articulate, already shaped, the pages of its future already waiting. 17/20 JANCIS ROBINSON

Good lord! Highly unusual to see Jancis write as if it's her last ever tasting note. The wines are deadly, even the packaging is deadly. John Wilson has also written extensively about them in the Irish Times and as he says, not because they are made by Irish, because they're so good. STSWine
