Major Champagne houses produce industrial quantities (millions of cases) of a style of wine according to a recipe that is in accordance with their branding and image. Grower Champagnes on the other hand are smaller, artisan operations usually run by families, focusing on the wine, terroir and vintage conditions. Growers are rare because grape growers can make a fantastic living simply by selling their harvest to a major house like Bollinger or Moet, per tonne grape prices in Champagne are high because we are being charged extortionate prices.

Moet turns over 1.2 billion, producing about 30 million bottles annually!! Henri Goutorbe is a small family run operation with its vineyards in the Grand Cru Village of Ay. Production across their range is less than 180,000 bottles annually. Goutorbe are famous amongst growers and producers as they are one of the industry leaders of vine cutting and propagation and their nursery is responsible for some of the finest vines in Champagne. Grand Cru fruit, made in small quantities from some of the finest vines in Champagne. This oozes class, and quality.
“Rather beguiling yet discreet nose defers to an interesting spicy personality in the mouth, with green apple, white pepper and even cardamom in evidence; intriguing, lots to like”. DECANTER MAGAZINE, GROWER CHAMPAGNE TASTING PANEL JULY 2017.
The wine is gorgeous, it is unusual, even a little bit funky on the nose, a beautifully made Champagne. Drink out of a normal wine glass to enjoy the aromatics! Class! STSWine
