Akutain are situated in Rioja Alta, and they are a grower producer, in that (unusually for Rioja) the wines are made with all estate grown fruit.

Akutain is a small, family owned bodega, situated in the higher parts of Rioja Alta – four kilometres west of the historic town of Haro. What sets Akutains apart, is that all their wines are made with the grapes grown by themselves. The family works just 6.5 hectares of vines, planted on limestone rich soil, and spread across four plots surrounding the winery. This is a small production and a hidden gem of Rioja Alta.

The estates Reserva is classic Rioja, with lots of cherry fruit and earthy herbiness on the nose. Deep and full-bodied, there are fine grippy tannins that balance the wine and a youthful freshness that suggests this wine will drink for 10-15 years. GERARD MAGUIRE
